Just read a news buzz on yahoo that makes me scratch my head and go WTF?

In a nutshell, it says President Obama has this plan of talking to students across U.S. live via White House website on Sept 8, just in time for Back-to-School, on the importance of education and staying in school.  In preparation for this, Secretary of Education sent out letters to schools across the nation inviting (but not requiring) them to watch the speech and conduct in class discussions regarding the President and his talk.

So far so good?

Well, not so much because apparently this angered some conservatives and they came out to accuse the President and his "agenda."  Some parents even wrote, and I quote: "I sent my children to school to be educated NOT indoctrinated."

Really?  Really?  Are we this contrary?!

For the record, I don't know yet if my son's school will broadcast the live streaming.  But even if they don't, I'll make sure he gets to hear what the President has to say.

It might be different for me here. I'd be excited if my Prez talked to the students in my country. :)

No kidding! I'm very excited that Mr. Prez is going to take time out of his busy schedule to speak to the youngsters of this country on the importance of education personally and directly.

From what I gathered, the objection was at the Department of Education sending out that letter to invite the schools to watch. But come on, it was only a suggestion, not a mandatory request. A very good suggestion I might add.

Constructive criticism is one thing, but just for the sake of being contrary (which I think is the case here) is something else.

Thanks for "listening" to my random rant. *hugs*

Oh my god, how dare Obama say such radical things to America's youth like education is a good thing.

Maybe the conservatives are worried that an increase in education will mean a decrease in their supporters.

Haha! That's a good one. Yeah, education does tend to work against the sheep syndrome.

I think this is an amazing idea! I hope your son gets the chance to be part of it.

I thought it is awesome that Obama would take time to address the youngsters personally on such important topic. Like the article said, both Reagan and Bush Senior had gave speeches directed at students in the past. And they were televised with much fanfares. The fact people would jump on Obama for doing what I regard as good public service annoys me. I get upset when someone chooses to be contrary for no good reason.

The irony here is if this hasn't resulted in controversy, I probably would not have found out about Obama's planned speech. Now that I know, I will not let my son miss it. *g*

It's today then, the speech. So, did your son's school get the live streaming?
I think it's an excellent idea if my President ever talked directly to the children at school.

Squeeee! Thanks for keeping up with my little rant. I asked my son's teacher this morning after I dropped him off at school. He told me the whole school (except several parents who request their children NOT to listen) will be watching the live stream in their multi-use room.

I myself just finished listening the speech. It was a good one, spoken from heart, from his own experience, about the importance of education. Here's a (rough) quote from the speech: Nobody is born good at something. You become good...

*huggles*

And now, why there are parents who don't want their children listen to The President's speech? They are Americans, right?

Sorry hon, it took me so long to reply you! Guess I got too caught up in Supernatural's new season. I suck big time.

Anyhow, I ran into the following Time's cartoon of the week (http://www.time.com/time/cartoonsoftheweek/0,29489,1921940_1932589,00.html?artId=1921940_1932589?contType=gallery?chn=Cartoons%20of%20the%20Week) the other day. Sarcasm aside, I feel it aptly answers your befitting question.

Oh I was hearing about this all over the CNN news whilst I was away (that's the only English speaking channel I could get) and I just didn't get what the issue was? This is why I stay out of politics all together.

So sorry about my slacking off my reply here. Supernatural (or rather the boys) broke my brain, again. But that's nothing new.

*pointing at the picture in my comment above*

I feel I can no better answer your question than this cartoon. It was Time's Cartoon of the week (Sept 12-18, 2009).

Now I shall stay out of politics and get back to the boys. ;-)

*Peace out*
