An Interview of MBV's Patrick Lussier

Saw an online exclusive interview of My Bloody Valentine's director Patrick Lussier today.  The full length article can be found here @ mania.  There is a major spoiler 2/3 down in case anyone haven't seen the movie.

Mania: We all know Jensen Ackles from the hit show Supernatural and playing the monster hunter. But here he really seemed to get into playing the role of the villain. What did you discuss with him as far as his approach to the role?

 

Lussier: So this is the big SPOILER question... Biggest thing we discussed was that Tom was a good guy. A guy who wasn't sly, wasn't trying to be sneaky. He was the unrequited lost lover of Jaime King's character, the rival to Axel (played by Kerr Smith), the prodigal son returned home from points unknown. We were careful to never present him as having any hidden villainy. He was trying to do the right thing, to reclaim a life derailed. Just so happened his past torments have haunted him in a way that he doesn't even realize. Jensen was great at walking that fine line between sympathetic and crazy, guarded and malicious. He is ultimately more tragic than evil.   Yet, in the end, he's still an unrepentant bad ass.

 

Mania: With its great success, are there any plans for a sequel to My Bloody Valentine 3D? 

 

Lussier: There are plans but no intentions. Todd and I along with Jaime, Kerr, Jensen and Edi would love to climb aboard the continuing adventures of the Miner. But for now, there are no plans to do so. Maybe down the road. Maybe. That's up to Lionsgate who have said they aren't interested at this time. So for now we're all moving on to other projects..

Jensen was great at walking that fine line between sympathetic and crazy, guarded and malicious

He's wonderful that way, isn't he? You can see it all the time when he's playing Dean, walking the line between snarky, wise-cracking older brother and the insecure, always-looking-for-approval, I'm-not-going-to-let-you-see-inside-me son/brother.

Yeah, too often people think Jensen is just a pretty face before they have a chance to see his work imo. Actually I'm guilty of that before I started watching Supernatural. He is unusually pretty, and I thought all he had to do was standing there and be pretty (like so many other young actors/actresses these days), he couldn't possibly need to act.

Talk about prejudice huh? Once I started watching the show, it quickly became clear how wrong I was, and how good an actor he is. His acting is nuanced and layered, and he never gets out of character when the camera is rolling.

It's gratifying to see it isn't just us fans appreciating Jensen's fine performance. The Director and the reporter both recognized what a fine job Jensen put forth for a role that's not so easily portrayed with depth.

Someone from my flist mentioned that if Jensen were to play Sam and some other actor played Dean, the character Dean would probably have remained a side-kick to Jensen's Sam, and I agree with her! Jensen has brought so much to Dean and the writers/directors saw that which was why I think Dean was brought into the mytharc along with Sam.

We can never know for sure with the "what ifs" unless Kripke publicly admits to something, which I don't see it would ever happen. But in private, I was thinking the SAME thing!

In the beginning, they always talked about Sam being "Luke Skywalker", the reluctant hero; while Dean being "Han Solo", the roguish charming sidekick.

While Han Solo was a fun character, the essence of the story has always been with Luke Skywalker, his journey. Even though Han Solo was awesome, he was only a tool I think.

With Jensen though, he brought so much to the show, I think everyone was enamored with the character. I remember watching that Paley Festival clip on YouTube, I couldn't help but notice when asked what was their favorite scene, from directors to writers/producers, they ALL mentioned a scene with Dean in it!

So yeah, I'm not surprised Dean is so prominent in Season 4. And this season kicked a$$! It's the best so far imo.

I know I'm a little late to this discussion (I had computer issues and was off-line for a few days), but I remember seeing a vid of Jensen, I think from ComiCon last year, where, when talking about Dean being part of the mytharc, he mentions Kripke saying something to him about being a "victim of his own success." I'm like you--I think Dean in another actor's hands would have been a one-note character. Dean is the character he is because of Jensen (IMO).

Kripke said Jensen is a victim of his own success? That's as close as admit the Dean we see today has a lot to do with what Jensen has done for the character! ::squee

I wonder how season 5 is going to play out. Selfishly I hope Dean remains front and center of the story. I've always felt Sam is more of a "tool" while Dean is the emotional center of the story. In a way I see Sam as the platinum setting for Dean's diamond. But then, I'm a Dean!girl through and through.

Isn't he just? Jensen plays layered character so well, and he can be badass (or kick ass) too despite the emo.

I'm disappointed to hear there's no plans for a sequel. I would totally go see it if there is one (with the same creative team of course). I feel the story isn't complete...
