The Dreaded Spam
Guess it's my turn now. As I've seen it happened to some of my flist members, my LJ just got hit by anonymous spammer. Some annoying anon posted a comment on an old entry of mine advertising...get this...furniture?!? Not that I want to get spammed, but couldn't I at least get something interesting? How boring am I? (Don't answer that.) Granted, I was talking about "prettifying" my journal's look & feel in that old entry. So is there some kind of text crawler at work around here sniffing out certain keywords? This is serious. I hope LiveJournal is able to put a stop to this ASAP.
I don't want to disable anonymous commenting because I do have friends visiting my journal who are not on LJ. All I can do at this point is deleting that comment and marking it as spam. I wonder if there's anyway to ban certain IP addresses (I track them in comments) from commenting on my journal. Anyone?

I didn't think we could block IP address, but I had to ask just to make sure. Thanks hon.

I don't know anything about blocking comments - sorry!

Besides it gets me nervous knowing there are some text crawler going through my entries for certain keywords.
I suspect there's no way to block anonymous comments unless that feature is turned off altogether. Oh well, I had to ask to make sure I didn't miss something. Thanks dear!

Ugh, yeah, I get ya.
I swear, if I ever have those problems, I'm gonna be so lost, haha.

I've no idea how to ban people by their IP addresses but I'm thinking that if you do that, you'd be banning more than one person? I mean, if any on your flist happens to have that same address ...
I got a hurtful comment from an anon once and what I did was screen all the anon comments after which I'll delete or unscreen them accordingly. You still get to see them but at least they won't get the "publicity" or whatever.

But alas, I didn't bother to click the links in the spam.
I don't think that anon is from my flist. And I don't think my flist members would share the same IP address except a couple of them who have dopplegangers.
But alas, I doubt we can block anon commenting based on IP address. The only way is to turn off the anon commenting completely, which is what I see other people are doing to battle this spam wave. However that's not an ideal option for me. :(
I'm sorry to hear you got a hurtful comment from anon. What is it with some cowards hiding behind anonymity and causing other's grief. >:(
Do you screen all comments then, or are you able to screen only anon's?
(p.s. I really adore your icon)

Aaahh, the icon ... Them holding hands caused quite a stir back then, yeah? Especially before the new season started when we had no idea what the holding hands were all about. I had pleasant daydreams thinking that was some kind of hurt/comfort after Sam brought Dean back from hell.

My journal was hit by a spam wave around X-mas. Never figured anything better, though, than to meticulously delete them and and ban each individual 'spammer'.

It frustrating and annoying, I know, but I haven't figured out anything better to do.

Hope you get rid of it. And hope you are well? Heading to that con in SF? I'd loooooooooooove to go. These last few days I miss the show and stuff. Hope you have a fun weekend and if you like do come and see my come back entry.

I'm doing well sweetie. Just really busy as usual. YES! I'm heading to SF Con first thing tomorrow. I couldn't attend today due to work and lack of hotel reservation. But I'm super excited about tomorrow and -- of course, Sunday! :D
I'll try to take as many pictures as I can. But my camera quality isn't too high since I left my good camera at UK with hubby. I completely forgot about this con while I was in UK! *facepalm*
*heading over to your entry*
