Oh dear, I couldn't agree with you more. At one hand, I love the connection between Dean and the warrior angel, but I adored him more for staying human. Like you said, Dean's humanity is what made the Winchesters saga so compelling to me (oddly enough the trials and tribulations of souless!Sam isn't).
I've noticed since last season that up until the end of S5, Dean was the only main character remained free from supernatural possession, and I suspect that was Kripke's conscious decision. But "Live Free or Twihard" changed that record. In that sense, even though I enjoyed that episode, I still can't say I feel entirely okay with turning Dean into a monster, albeit for such a short period of time. I wonder if this means SPN is going to explore further into the "humanistic" aspect of the monsters. In the past, I think "Monster Movie" and "Metamorphosis" did a pretty good job on that. I'd actually like to see more exploration along that line.
Speaking of Kara Thrace, I have a little confession to make: part of the reason I fell so in love with Dean Winchester is because this character answers and makes up for all the disappointments I had in the characterization of Kara Thrace. No lie, I have never tried so hard to like a fictional character as I did Kara.
As for Ben, I'm really hoping, no make that prying, he is NOT Dean's biological son. Selfishly, I enjoy too much of Dean as a brother, so I'm not interested in seeing him being a father to Ben more than what we've already seen.
p.s. So sorry it took me so long to respond. I've had a busy week. I wish I could spend more time catching up with LJ. I have a list of places I want to "stalk", and yours is on the very top!
ETA: oops, I decided to switch the userpic for this. I almost forgot I had this one in my collection.
