I thought the same too. I like it much better that the scene played out the way it did--when Lee took off his wings, he was in control of his emotions, he was defiant, sure of what he was doing, and I love how he challenged Bill with his eyes. I really had a sense that Lee has grown into this person who just stepped out of his father's shadow.
I think you were right too that Bill was the one being emotional in this scene. Even though EJO didn't use big body movements, but the fact he was avoiding looking at Lee, and didn't even glance at Lee's wings before he threw it in his drawer suggested to me that he was royally pissed at his son, and he let his emotions get the better of him.
Another tidbit I find interesting in this interview is Jamie said he had quite a hand in the writing of the Crossroads, II script. Hmmm, I wonder which part--could it be Lee's big speech?! Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed to see him write a script for an episode in season 4.
