The implication of this gives me some interesting thoughts.

If it means less self-loathing for Dean then it can only be a good thing.

Yes, totally agree! I think with this statement (he was a soldier served in Hell), Dean is starting to see he was in an impossible situation that went beyond his control. His cracking up towards the end there did not make him a lesser man. The fact he's able to pick up from where he fell and get pass his weakness makes him incredibly strong in my book.

Dean's come to realise that he has to let go!
