I can't seem to get Cambridge out of my mind. I went searching for the famous poem written by the modern Chinese (romantic) poet 徐志摩 (Xu Zhimo) who studied in Cambridge University in the early 1920s. It's called 「再别康桥」or "Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again" in English.  The poem was written after Xu left Cambridge for home in 1928. I didn't know this when I was there, but in 2008, they put a white marble stone at the back of King's College with inscriptions from this poem to commemorate Xu.

While I was searching for the full text of the poem, I also found a really good English translation of the work from wikipedia.

Well, actually I came back home late Monday night. But I was so tired yesterday that I was barely human, so...

It's been a wonderful trip to England. Although I never did get a chance to visit London except coming to and fro Heathrow airport. The rest of time we spent in Cambridge entirely. Oh, how I loved this charming little town!

Here's a few snapshots under the cut... )

p.s. I apologize to everyone here that I've neglected my flist and LJ for quite a while due to this trip. I will attempt to reply your comments and check out your posts. Did I miss much?

What a coincidence. Yesterday I saw the "Word of the Day" prompt from my Dictionary app showing the word lucifugous (meaning avoiding light). Less than half hour later, I ran into a new collaborative fic by [livejournal.com profile] leonidaslion (author) and [livejournal.com profile] dreamlittleyo (artist). It's called Sing Your Hymns Like Angels in Defeat (link to the master post). It's a post Apocalypse AU story, and is divided in three parts: "Requiem", "Nocturne", and "Oratorio". The work truly is as lyrical as these titles suggest. I'm sure it comes as no surprise to anyone that these two each is fabulous in her own right; together they are team dynamite! Oh, I don't think it's spoilery for me to say this since it's established early on that the story features blind!Dean. Also it's Sam/Dean with a past established relationship.
Summary: And Lucifer Fell for a second time with the burning brilliance of a star. The Flare shone in his wake, and darkness fell upon the land ...

I read a lovely missing scene co-written by [livejournal.com profile] triquetralmoon and [livejournal.com profile] wave_obscura called The Ache.

Summary:  Missing scene from 6.01. hurt!sick!Dean This will probably be Kripke'd immediately, but - it gets inside Sam's head.

My Note: it has my favorite theme which is hurt!Dean + protective!Sam. It's GEN, although the Sam here is quite possessive about Dean too. Also I adore the line Sam said to the curious cousin Gwen who was a tad too obsessed about Dean's "delicate features" (I wonder if anyone can guess which one it is). Oh, there's callback to Dean's resemblance to Mary from Samuel as well so it's not a wonder I loved it so much.
I have been having an extremely annoying problem with my iPhone 4's Notes app lately. I use it a lot to write notes to self and more importantly, use it as the text editor to compose comments to post on LJ. But since my last iOS4 update, the Notes app started to randomly truncate what I wrote. Kid you not! Those thoughts I jotted down in the past 5 minutes? Could arbitrarily disappear in a blink of an eye! *argh*

I finally googled online to see if my problem is unique. Lo and behold, I'm not the only one having the exact same problem! Surprised? Not. Turns out Apple recently made a change to Notes so that it will silently sync whatever notes being edited with the user's online email! True enough, unbeknownst to me, there is a "Notes" folder created for each of the email accounts (I had two) I set up on my iPhone.

That sure explained why something is seemingly overwriting my texts. Depending on the time the sync occurs and the speed of the data transfer, if I happen to be editing during the syncing, the service replaces the version I'm modifying with an earlier cached version!

Good news is there's an easy way to stop this from happening again. To turn off sync for Notes, on the phone, go to Settings > Mail, Contact, Calendars > Mail Account and make sure the Notes is on Off position. Also in iTunes, click the info pane and deselect the option to Sync Notes. Phew!

Saw this magic genie dude mentioned at [livejournal.com profile] poor_choices' place. To play, he asks you to think about a real or fictional character, and he will try to guess who it is (via a series of questions).

I gave him a try, and to my amazement, he's frakking unbelievable!

See what he guessed... )

I had a fun time yesterday with my best friend and my boy. Together we went to a Jazz Festival. First, there was the concert by African born artist Angélique Kidjo in the afternoon. I really had no idea who she was before yesterday, but I loved her voice and music. Turned out she's a Grammy award winning singer-songwriter (for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2008). During her performance, fellow Grammy winner Jazz musician (and festival featured artist) Dianne Reeves made a surprise appearance and sang a duet with Kidjo. But the highlight of the day for me was the concert in the evening, given by none other than Harry Connick, Jr.

Just saw this at [livejournal.com profile] evening_spirit's journal. It's so beautiful, and it makes me think of all the wonderful friends I met over the 'net, some of you I even was fortunate enough to meet in person. You are everything the quote says...

If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.
I've always known my Alma mater campus is beautiful, especially in the falls. But I'm quite biased of course. Only Hubby just now pointed me to the link The Worlds's Most Beautiful College Campuses according to Forbes.com, and WOW, this little school in the middle of Ohio is ranked #1! \o/

This has taken me two days to write mainly because I want to allow sufficient time for my experiment results to get back to me. What I set out to do is a follow up on the recent LJ changes I talked about in a previous post.

Since I made that entry, I got over my initial whine that people at LiveJournal, Inc. are too well versed in messing with us. Really, why would the company spend its money and resources implementing code changes for services that are not needed, or even worse, harmful to its users? Are these people that dumb or evil? I could hardly believe that when I thought about it more rationally.

The world of internet is a precarious place, I've learned. More often than not, all it took was an accusing finger and a catch-phrase for a chorus of voices to join in. Protection of privacy is a serious issue. Like many others, I easily get antsy and riled up when I think my right is in danger of being violated. But do I really know what's going on here? Or am I echoing other people's opinion without knowing the facts? When I thought in that term, I realized I had only a cursory idea on how crosspost and pingback works. The good thing is, it's not hard to find out. Since I have two separate LJ user accounts and a sporadically used FB account, with a little time and effort, I can see for myself how these two services work by conducting a series of experiments.

( Sep. 1st, 2010 12:11 pm)
Most people here on LJ noticed last night the "Repost to" Facebook and Twitter checkboxes magically appearing underneath the text editor whenever we post something. If you are like me, I'd like to keep my LJ personality separate from my Facebook one, thank you very much. So here comes the worry -- What if I accidentally checked that box that says 'Repost to Facebook' just before I press the Post button?

Well, this is what I found out: as long as I'm not logged in Facebook or Twitter via LJ, those checkboxes are not enabled (which of course means I'm not able to select it). Phew!

Now, for strange reasons, if you do want to cross post, you would need to log on to Facebook or Twitter via LJ first. Notice merely logging on to those accounts on the same computer is not enough. You would have to go to the account setting on LJ to connect to Facebook and/or Twitter.

To login or logout from these social network sites, go to your setting extensions to make the appropriate change.
FYI: as of this morning, if you try to connect to Facebook, you'd get a message that says Bogus form data; please go back and try again. - me think LJ must've been bombarded with angry users since last night that they scrambled to keep the situation under control.

Besides the cross post option, LJ also implemented a related service called "pingback". Now, what are pingbacks? You can refer to FAQ #293 for a description. In a nutshell, when the pingback service is turned on, it is designed to alert you when someone linked your post in their own LJ posts. At first glance, this seems to be a desirable service. After all, who wouldn't want to keep track of what other people are saying about what s/he wrote in her/his posts, eh? However, here's the catch: when you turned the service on to keep track of where your posts are linked to, you also agree to allow LJ alert other users who chose to enabled the pingback service should you link their posts in your entry or comment, even if that entry or comment is flocked or private. Scary isn't it? Especially when the alert is sent, LJ quotes ~600 word context surrounding the link in question, regardless of the privacy setting of the post.

So yes, I think the pingback service is a double edged sword. In the spirit of keeping my privacy intact, I'd rather stay ignorant of who's linking my post to where. To turn on/off the service, you can go to the privacy setting of your account to make the appropriate change.

And lastly, [livejournal.com profile] felisblanco mentioned that LJ has now fucked up its handling of "/" in their tags. So if you see an LJ tag that has a "/" in it, and try to get the tagged entries, it won't work any more! I wonder how long it's going to take LJ fix that. If they don't do it soon, they might have a massive exodus of users from LJ land on their hand.
I was at local Borders today and saw the newest edition of the Supernatural Official Magazine. I don't have the time to make the scan yet. The perennial J2 interview IMO mostly consists the same stuff we've already read/heard anyway. But there's a segment of Sera Gamble's interview really caught my attention, mainly because she was asked a question that I had previously wondered about a lot.

Okay, I don't do this often at my journal. Posting pictures found over the 'net that is. But after Jensen's recent shirtless soccer pictures made my mouth water, the images of leather clad Mr. Ackles from Van Con short circuited my brain.

So here we go, oh by the way, Jensen's partner-in-crime Jared is no slouch either. These guys are so darn pretty.
